A smart home is a residence that uses internet-connected devices to enable the remote monitoring and management of appliances and systems, such as lighting and heating.

What if all the devices in your life could connect to the internet? Not just computers and smartphones, but everything: clocks, speakers, lights, door bells, cameras, windows, window blinds, hot water heaters, appliances, cooking utensils, you name it. And what if those devices could all communicate, send you information, and take your commands? It’s not science fiction; it’s the Internet of Things and it’s a key component of home automation and smart homes. Home automation is exactly what it sounds like: automating the ability to control items around the house—from window to pet feeders—with a simple push of a button (or a voice command).

An Internet Protocol camera, or IP camera, is a type of digital video camera commonly employed for surveillance, and which, unlike analogue closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, can send and receive data via a computer network and the Internet. Although most cameras that do this are webcams, the term IP camera is usually applied only to those used for surveillance that can be directly accessed over a network connection.

A closed-circuit television camera (CCTV camera) can produce images or recordings for surveillance or other private purposes.
